Since 1997 Kevin has built a solid reputation as a patient therapist with a gift of insight.
History
Born in Ottawa and growing up in Aylmer Quebec, Kevin completed a Bachelor of Arts with honours degree in Psychology at Carleton University. He completed formal therapy training and earned a Master’s of Science degree in Marriage and Family Therapy (MFT) from the University of Guelph. After graduation he worked for three years as a Family Therapist at Family Service London in the Community Counselling Programme. He also facilitated groups for men who were abusive toward women and worked to help men take responsibility for their abusive behaviour, and end violence. Kevin also worked to help many women reclaim their lives from current and past physically and sexually abusive relationships.
In the spring of 1997, Kevin sought to strengthen his therapy skills by taking additional training in Adelaide Australia learning about Narrative Approaches Therapy. (www.dulwichcentre.com.au)
In 1997 Kevin returned to Guelph to start a private practice under the name Hillside Family Therapy (HFT). Originally located in the Terrace Building at 328 Woolwich Street, Hillside Family Therapy began as a collaborative effort with colleague and Family Therapist, Louise Oke. It would later become Kevin’s independent practice. As Kevin’s reputation began to build, people came to recognize and associate his name with the practice. So, while Hillside Family Therapy remains the legal business name, it is no longer used in any promotion or advertising material.
In 2004 Kevin moved his practice into an office connected to his home at 89 Flaherty Drive in Guelph’s north-west corner (Chillico Heights). The office is separated from the rest of the house and complete with private entrance, waiting area and washroom facilities.
Prior to formal therapy training Kevin worked with Stafford Associates, a small family based business in Ottawa dedicated to personal growth and human development. During this time he co-lead or lead workshops in Assertive Communication, Human Skills, and Humour. He often co-lead workshops with his parents, Sheila and the late Charles Stafford.
Kevin’s first career was in the Restaurant Business in Ottawa during the 1980’s. Starting out as a bartender he quickly moved in to various management positions and worked for a number of popular restaurant and bar establishments.
